In February of 1980, the body of an unidentified person was discovered in a shallow grave along Fly Creek near Canyon Creek Road. Investigators determined the victim was a young female who died from a gunshot wound to the back of the head.
In 2019, through forensic genetic genealogy, the victim was identified as Sandra “Sandy” Morden. Sandy was born on April 29, 1962, in San Francisco to Andrew Morden and Kathryn Irene (Long) Morden. Her parents later divorced, and Sandy most recently lived with her father in Vancouver, Washington. At the time, he worked on tugboats and was often away from home for extended periods.
Sandy stayed with friends intermittently and attended several schools in the region, including Gaiser Middle School in Vancouver (1975–76), Wilson High School in Portland (1976–77), and she was registered to attend Newberg High School in 1977. She was 16 years old when she disappeared. Both of her parents have since passed away.
Investigators continue efforts to learn more about Sandy and the circumstances of her life and disappearance. Anyone with information is urged to contact investigators.
