Excusal from Jury Duty
Requests to be excused from jury duty must be in writing. You may request to be excused online at https://jury.clark.wa.gov/ or by completing the paper questionnaire at the bottom of your summons and mailing it to Jury Administration within five (5) days.
Except for a person who does not meet the eligibility requirements for jury duty, no person may be excused from jury service except upon a showing of undue hardship, extreme inconvenience, public necessity, or any reason deemed sufficient by the court for a period of time the court deems necessary. (Revised Code of Washington (RCW) 2.36.100)
During the COVID-19 state of emergency, Jury Management staff has the authority to excuse Healthcare/Public Health essential personnel as designated by the Washington State Governor’s March 23, 2020 Proclamation 20-25.
Your request to be excused will be reviewed once Jury Administration receives it. You will receive a response in writing if you have been excused or if your request has been denied.
Postponement of Jury Duty
If necessary, you may postpone your jury term to a more convenient date. You must state the reason you cannot serve during the scheduled time. You must also identify a one-week period, within six months of the scheduled week, when you can serve. You may request to be postponed online at https://jury.clark.wa.gov/ or by completing the paper questionnaire at the bottom of your summons and mailing it to Jury Administration within five (5) days.
Extended Postponements for High-Risk Populations
During the COVID-19 state of emergency, Jury Management staff have the authority to postpone jurors report date based on the CDC guideline for high risk populations:
1. Persons 65 years and older
2. Persons who live in a nursing home or long-term care facility
3. Persons of all ages with underlying medical conditions (particularly not well controlled)
a. Persons with chronic lung disease or moderate to severe asthma
b. Persons who have serious heart conditions
c. Persons who are immunocompromised
d. Persons with severe obesity
e. Persons with diabetes
f. Persons with chronic kidney disease undergoing dialysis
g. Persons with liver disease
If you fall into one of these categories and desire to be rescheduled to a later report date, you can make a request online at https://jury.clark.wa.gov/. If you prefer, you may make a written request by completing the paper questionnaire and returning it within five days.
