3-Day Trip Permits
A Washington vehicle trip permit authorizes you to operate a single vehicle at the maximum weight limit for 3 consecutive days within Washington. No more than 3 permits may be used for any 1 vehicle within a 30-day period. Trip permits can be purchased at any licensing office or at any Department of Transportation permitting office and cost $30 each.
You must purchase a special fuel permit when entering Washington if you:
Don’t pay fuel tax under the International Fuel Tax Agreement (IFTA)
Plan to operate a diesel or propane-powered commercial vehicle that has:
- 2 axles and a gross vehicle weight (GVW) over 26,000 pounds
- 3 or more axles regardless of weight
- A combination of vehicles with a combined GVW over 26,000 pounds
If you need to take your vehicle to obtain a certified weight slip, or for your appointment with Washington State Patrol, you can purchase a transit permit. We require the vehicle information, your government issued identification, and the exact date of use.
The cost for this service is $5.00 and the permit can be purchased at any licensing office.
60-Day Temporary Trip Permit
If you purchased a vehicle from an out-of-state dealer or you have moved to Washington and you do not have all required documents to register your vehicle, you can apply for a 60-day temporary permit.
Please contact a licensing office for more information and to see if this permit is the right fit for you.
