Vancouver, WA – Remarkable achievements by volunteers highlighted the best of Clark County today during the State of the County event at Skyview High School.
The Board of County Councilors presented Spirit of Clark County awards for outstanding community service to Clark County Connects, Roy Garrison and Washington State University Extension Clark County Master Gardeners.
Created in 2001, the Spirit awards acknowledge special efforts and extraordinary contributions by volunteers who expand and improve public services throughout the county.
This year’s winners:
• Clark County Connects (Project Award): The project assembled and deployed 300 volunteers who donated nearly 1200 hours in one day of service to benefit county parks and other community causes.
• Roy Garrison (Individual Award): The award recognized Garrison for 38 years of volunteer work on behalf of the Clark County Fair. During that time, he has done just about everything a volunteer could do, including recruiting others and preparing them to lead. Special accomplishments include a large display of historic farm implements painstakingly restored and explained.
• Master Gardeners (Group Award): More than 250 volunteers taught children, assisted seniors, cultivated gardens on public display and answered legions of questions about home gardens. In all, they provided thousands of hours of service worth hundreds of thousands of dollars.
The event, including remarks by county councilors, Sheriff Chuck E. Atkins and Acting County Manager Mark McCauley can be seen on CVTV (Clark-Vancouver Television) Channels 21 and 23. The program also included brief remarks by Todd Coleman, Port of Vancouver USA chief executive officer, and Bryce Helgerson, Legacy Salmon Creek Medical Center chief administrative officer.
