STEPS FOR CURING A CHALLENGED SIGNATURE BY A THIRD PARTY
- Every day, it’s important to download a daily matchback list from the State before beginning ballot signature curing, so they are not talking to voters who have already returned their signature form.
- When talking with the voter, let them know that you are NOT with the Elections Office but are working for a party or a campaign.
- Make sure the voter knows they can find their signature update form on VoteWA.gov and take care of it themselves.
- Let the voter know the Elections Office will be mailing them the form in the mail. Reinforce the deadline for returning the form and suggest it be emailed or brought into the Elections Office rather than mailed to ensure it is received on time.
- For a Signature that does not match make sure it is understood that voters must provide the same signature that they signed on their ballot envelope.
- For an Unsigned envelope: The voter must provide the signature that matches the one in their voter record.
- If the voter cannot remember how they signed, it would be wise to provide them information about the secondary ID option. But, let them know the County Elections Office would still like to get their current signature, so future signature issues do not occur. Only the voter may provide the Elections Office with the secondary ID. They may provide the it via phone, email, or in-person. The voter must also affirm with the Elections Office they voted the ballot. Valid secondary ID verification may be:
- Last four digits of the voter’s Social Security Number
- Full Washington driver’s license number, instruction permit, or state identicard card number
- Alternate ID
- Valid enrollment card of a federally recognized Indian tribe in Washington state
- Copy of a current utility bill or bank statement
- Copy of a current government check
- Copy of a current paycheck
- Another government document
