Guardian ad Litem (GAL)

A Guardian Ad Litem (GAL) is an adult who is appointed by the court to represent the best interest of the child(ren) or alleged incapacitated person for a specific purpose for a specific period of time. Under the direction of the court, a GAL performs an investigation and prepares a report for the court of the GAL's findings and recommendations.

To become a GAL, an individual must complete an approved training program, provide background information to the court(s) in which the GAL wishes to serve, and meet all eligibility requirements set by local court rule or policy.

GAL is different from a Certified Professional Guardian (CPG). A CPG is an individual or agency who serves as the legal guardian of at least three individuals and provides this service as a profession.

Clark County Superior Court maintains GAL/court visitor registries under:

• Title 11 (alleged incapacitated person RCW 11.88 & RCW 11.92 / guardianship of minor RCW 11.130)

• Title 13 (dependency/CASA conflict list RCW 13.34)

• Title 26 (representing children in dissolutions, modifications, paternity, relocation RCW 26)

• Adoption

Under the new local rules, effective September 1, 2022, and RCW 26.12.177(b), Title 26 appointees will be assigned by the first three names available on the registry that do not have an appointment. If all three names are rejected by the parties the next GAL will be appointed. If you are unable to take new appointments, please notify Court Administration to request a pause of up to 3 months. Exceptions can be made to extend a pause beyond 3 months. If you are removed from the registry list you must reapply to be returned to the registry.
