On February 15, 1977, Joseph Harris was found deceased at Paradise Point State Park in Clark County, Washington. Harris died as a result of blunt force trauma to the head.

At the time of his death, Harris was traveling from Montana to Portland, Oregon, following a work trip. He had been hitchhiking with only a few personal possessions and was accompanied by his dog.

Investigators determined that Harris' dog was also killed during the incident. The circumstances surrounding Harris' death remain unsolved.
