On January 2, 2015, the body of Jessica Danielle Newton, 40, was found along the Clark County bank of the Columbia River on Bachelor Island. Her death was ruled a homicide resulting from multiple injuries. 

On September 5, 2011, the body of David Gates was found in bushes near 1220 NE 88th Street. Evidence showed that Gates had suffered head trauma, and his death was ruled a homicide. 

Gates was known to be experiencing homelessness and living in the area at the time of his death. The case remains unsolved. 

During the early morning hours of February 4, 2007, Donald Brown, 39, was found dead in his home in the 9700 block of NE 104th Court. He was discovered by his girlfriend when she returned home late that night. Brown had been stabbed repeatedly and is believed to have been attacked in his bedroom after being awakened.

Khoi Vu, 25, was last seen by family members at their home in the 13110 block of NE 92nd Street in the Orchards area. The family planned to leave for Seattle at 8 a.m. the next morning, but Vu was not in the house when they woke. 

Michael Hinman, 41, called his wife from work to report that he was not feeling well and was going home. When she arrived at their residence, his vehicle was gone but his personal belongings were inside. 

On October 31, 2001, Earl Sexton, 74, left his Fern Prairie home in the 27500 block of NE Ninth Street in Camas for a walk. Sexton, who suffered from Alzheimer’s disease, was known to take long walks along various routes in the area. 

He never returned and has never been found. Investigators do not suspect foul play in his disappearance. 

In December 2000, Joseph Frank Thomas, 38, was reported missing by his wife after a four-day period without contact. Thomas had a history of methamphetamine use and theft, and at the time of his disappearance, investigators initially considered the possibility that he was avoiding arrest due to outstanding warrants. 

The body of Karl “Kurt” Kraal, 37, was found inside his home near the 18400 block of NE 167th Avenue in Battle Ground. Kraal operated an auto body repair and painting business on his property, and his employees discovered his body when they arrived for work. 

Jason Cruze, 24, was reported missing by family members after he had not been seen or heard from for about a week. Early in the investigation, detectives developed information indicating that Cruze had been murdered and may have been killed in one of several locations within Vancouver. 

On September 23, 1997, Michael Casteel, 49—also known as “Jesus Mike”—was found deceased in a back bedroom of his home in the 4100 block of NE 64th Avenue in the Vancouver area. Deputies had responded to a report of a disturbance involving a weapon and determined that a home-invasion robbery had occurred. 

On September 11, 1989, the bodies of Dale Anderson, 54, and his wife, Janet Anderson, 51, were discovered inside their home in the 2500 block of SE 362nd Avenue in Washougal. 

Marti Hetzell, 18, of Vancouver, had been missing from his home in the 7700 block of NE 110th Street for five days when his mother filed a missing person report. He had planned to stay with a friend in the Orchards area, but he has not been seen or heard from since. His disappearance remains unsolved. 

Kimberly Kersey, 18, left Mountain View High School and was believed to be walking home, but she never arrived and was never seen again. Her school books were later found on a trail near her parents’ apartment in the 13600 block of Northeast 18th Street in Vancouver. 

On July 8, 1987, the body of Hahn “Sandy” Nguyen was discovered by a family member inside their home in the 1700 block of Northeast 97th Street in Vancouver, where she lived. Nguyen and her family worked at a berry farm, but on the day of her death she had remained home while the others went to work. 

On February 8, 1983, Heather Guy, 29, visited several bars in Camas before being dropped off near her grandparents’ home in the 38200 block of SE 70th Street in Washougal at about 2 a.m. by her boyfriend. 

She has not been heard from since, and her body has never been found. Her disappearance remains an open and unsolved case. 

The body of Trina Hunter, 17, was found along the roadway in the 4300 block of Northeast 239th Street in Battle Ground. Although her cause of death was determined to be drowning, the circumstances surrounding the discovery indicate homicide. 

The decomposed body of Joni Waterfall, 31, was found approximately 500 feet north of Northwest La Center Road, east of Interstate 5. She had died from a gunshot wound to the head. 

Due to the condition of the remains, Waterfall was not identified until three years after her body was discovered. The case remains unsolved. 

Catherine Dawes, 27, a night clerk at the Minit Mart Quick Shop located at 10409 S.E. Mill Plain Road in Vancouver, was found deceased in the store’s back storage room. She had been bound and blindfolded. 

Robert Casson, 50, was found deceased in his Hazel Dell home near the 300 block of NW 88th Street. Casson, a TriMet bus driver in Portland, died from multiple stab wounds. 

Several items were stolen from his residence, including his Cadillac, which was later recovered in northwest Portland. 

In May 1981, Elmer Swanson, 47, was last seen at the Orchards Tap Tavern, where he frequently gambled. Several months later, his body was discovered on the grounds of the former Clark County Aerodrome at 9115 N.E. 117th Avenue. 

In February of 1980, the body of an unidentified person was discovered in a shallow grave along Fly Creek near Canyon Creek Road. Investigators determined the victim was a young female who died from a gunshot wound to the back of the head. 

The body of Angelic French, 26, was found near La Center on County Road No. 1, approximately one mile north of Toenjes Road. She died from strangulation, and her death was ruled a homicide. 

French was from Tacoma and was known to have engaged in prostitution there and in Portland. Her case remains unsolved. 

The bodies of Carol Valenzuela, 18, and an unidentified female were discovered in the Dole Valley area near the Rock Creek Bridge. Valenzuela had been missing for approximately two months at the time her remains were found. 

Gloria Knutson was reported missing from Vancouver, Washington, after telling a witness an unknown male was stalking her. Her remains were discovered near Lacamas Lake in 1978. 

Warren Forrest, a convicted serial killer, is considered a suspect in her death. The case remains unsolved. 

Diane Sue Gilchrist, 14, of Vancouver, was reported missing by her mother after the family had not seen or heard from her for two days. She was last seen getting into a van driven by an unidentified man. 

Barbara Derry, 18, of Goldendale, Washington, had been staying in Vancouver and was known to regularly hitchhike. She had not been seen by her family for approximately a month when her body was discovered at the bottom of a wooden cistern near the Amboy Grist Mill. 
Her death was ruled a homicide caused by trauma to her chest. 
The case remains unsolved. 

On December 7, 1971, Jamie Grissim, 16, left Fort Vancouver High School but never returned home. In the months following her disappearance, Jamie’s school ID card and several personal items were discovered along Dole Valley Road in east Clark County. 

On June 24, 1962, 67-year-old Lester McCollum was found deceased inside his home near Battle Ground after friends became concerned for his welfare. He had suffered a fatal wound to the back of the head, and his death was ruled a homicide.
