Gabrielson Barn

Body

The Dutch Gambrel-style barn was built by Mr. Gabrielson in 1945 and was most likely built for a dairy cow operation. The lower level still has some of the old stanchions with feeding troughs located in front of the stanchions. The concrete floor also has gutters formed into it to aid in the removal of manure. There are some remnants of a vacuum pipe system, probably used to transport the milk to a central container. The large loft above the ground floor appears to have been made for storing loose hay with most of the old hay track components still in place along with the large door up near the peak. There are also four symmetrically located openings in the loft floor near the two side walls, which appear to have been used for dropping hay down to the lower level for feeding cows.

All of the lumber and timbers used in the barn construction are rough-sawn with the exception of the decking used for the upper level floor. The decking is planed, tongue-and-groove 2 x 8. Also the siding is planed and moulded 1 x 6 lumber. All of the wood appears to be Douglas fir.

Mr. Gabrielson passed away in the late 1970's. The original 80 acres that he owned was broken up into sixteen 5-acre parcels and sold.
