Clark County Council to consider speed limits on county road sections

Vancouver, Wash. – Residents will have a chance next week to offer their thoughts before Clark County considers changing or setting speed limits on six sections of county roadway.

The Clark County Council will hold a public hearing on the speed limit updates at 6 pm Tuesday, March 19, in the sixth-floor Hearing Room of the Public Service Center, 1300 Franklin St.

In some cases, the council will be asked to lower or increase speed limits. In other cases, the council will consider setting speed limits on roads that currently are unposted or have posted speed limits but the county does not have formal resolutions supporting those posted limits.

The maximum permissible speed on unposted county roads is 50 mph.

Public Works routinely evaluates speed limits based on comments from residents, requests from the Clark County Sheriff’s Office, observations by county traffic engineers and changes in development and road conditions.

State law prohibits driving at a speed faster than what is “reasonable and prudent” given conditions, commonly referred to as the “basic rule,” and sets a maximum 50 mph speed limit on county roads.

The county council next week will consider speed limits on the following road sections:

  • Northeast Manley Road/Northeast 92nd Avenue between Northeast 239th Street and Northeast 259th Street – This currently falls under the basic speed rule in state law. The county proposes a consistent 35 mph speed limit.
  • Northeast 239th Street between Northeast 92nd Avenue and Battle Ground city limits – This road currently falls under the basic speed rule. The county is proposing to set a 35 mph speed limit to match the speed limit to the east in the city jurisdiction.
  • Northeast 20th Avenue between Northeast Highway 99 and Northeast 134th Street – The current speed limit is 25 mph. The county is proposing to increase the speed limit to 40 mph.
  • Northeast Highway 99 between Northeast 20th Avenue and Northeast 134th Street – The current speed limit is 40 mph. The county is proposing to reduce the limit to 25 mph.
  • Northeast Tenney Road/Northeast 134th Street between Northeast 10th Avenue and Northeast Salmon Creek Avenue – The speed limits on this road section change between 30 and 35 mph. The county is recommending a consistent speed limit of 35 mph.
  • Northeast 47th Avenue between Northeast Minnehaha Street and Northeast 78th Street – The roadway is posted at a 25 mph speed limit. The county recommends increasing the limit to 35 mph.
