Vancouver, WA – Ongoing work to improve the Northeast 78th Street-47th Avenue intersection in the Hazel Dell area will require three weekend road closures. Northeast 78th Street will be closed to all traffic at the intersection from: • 9 p.m. Thursday, May 14, to 6 a.m. Monday, May 18. • 9 p.m. Thursday, May 21, to 6 a.m. Monday, May 25 (Memorial Day). • 9 p.m. Friday, May 29, to 6 a.m. Monday, June 1. During the closures, drivers will need to use alternate routes such as Northeast Andresen Road, Northeast 63rd Street or 88th Street and Northeast St. Johns Road. A map showing these routes is available on the Clark County www.clark.wa.gov/public-works. The county’s contractor might finish early and open Northeast 78th Street before 6 a.m. Monday on one or more of the weekends. The contractor also might need an additional closure or a longer closure on the third weekend. Drivers should watch for updates on roadside reader boards or check the county’s website, www.clark.wa.gov/public-works. Clark County has alerted police, fire, ambulance and 911 dispatch to the upcoming road closures. The county also has coordinated with Vancouver Public Schools and C-Tran, which will have to temporarily reroute its No. 78 bus line. The project includes replacing railroad crossings, realigning the entrance to the Public Works Operations Center, adding a traffic signal and building drainage improvements. Clark County’s contractor started work last month and has intermittently closed lanes on 78th Street, causing traffic backups. For this reason, drivers might want to use alternate routes and avoid the area during construction, which is expected to wrap up in June. A separate project to improve Northeast 47th Avenue between 68th and 78th streets is scheduled to begin next month. That work will not cause major traffic issues.
