A local soccer group will install additional field lights at Luke Jensen Sports Park, further expanding use of the 20-acre facility.
The Board of County Councilors this week approved an agreement with Vancouver West Soccer Club to install lights for two synthetic turf fields north of the main parking lot.
The lights are expected to be installed in four to six weeks, although a firm schedule has not yet been set. Once installed, the lights will allow the fields to be used an additional one to two hours a day in spring and summer and three to six hours a day in fall and winter.
Vancouver West Soccer Club will provide $34,000 for six lights to illuminate the two fields. In return, Clark County will give the soccer club a 75 percent discount on field rentals, an amount not to exceed $17,000 annually. Once the cumulative discount reaches the cost of the field lights, the club will resume paying the full rental rate.
With the new lights, the county expects to collect an additional $20,000 a year in field rentals from groups besides Vancouver West Soccer Club.
The lights will be installed on existing towers built when the sports park was constructed in 2011-12. Once the lights are installed, all but one of the park’s five fields will have lighting for expanded use.
Luke Jensen Sports Park, 4000 N.E 78th St., opened in 2012. It features three synthetic turf multiuse fields, two grass baseball fields, concession facilities, restrooms, a playground and a community meeting room that seats about 100 people.
The park is named for Luke Jensen, who attended King’s Way Christian Schools, adjacent to the sports park. Luke died of leukemia in May 2010 when he was 9. The park features a bronze plaque with an inspirational message from his family honoring Luke and others who have faced cancer with courage and hope.
