Northeast 72nd Avenue and Northeast 239th Street

UPDATE - April 2024

Starting April 18, the intersection of Northeast 72nd Avenue and Northeast 239th Street will become an all-way stop-sign-controlled intersection. This change will add stop signs to Northeast 72nd Avenue as it approaches Northeast 239th Street, creating an all-way stop-sign-controlled intersection. This change will improve safety and mobility at this intersection.  Drivers may notice increased police presence in the area in the coming weeks as they assist with safe operation and traffic control.  Work is weather-dependent but is currently scheduled through April 23.

The intersection of Northeast 72nd Avenue and Northeast 239th Street is changing. Currently, the traffic on Northeast 239th Street as it approaches Northeast 72nd Avenue is controlled by stop signs. This change will add stop signs to Northeast 72nd Avenue as it approaches Northeast 239th Street, creating an all-way stop-sign controlled intersection. Installation of an all-way stop at the intersection of Northeast 72nd Avenue and Northeast 239th Street is an inexpensive and effective traffic control measure to facilitate safety and mobility. It is an interim solution to installation of a traffic signal or roundabout which will be necessary once traffic levels increase to a specific threshold. The decision to change this intersection to an all-way stop controlled intersection was based on an engineering study that evaluated crash history, traffic volume, delay times and sight distance. Using the guidance found in the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) and the data collected for this engineering study, it was determined that an all-way stop is warranted.

This change is a result of the public alerting us to perceived issues at the Northeast 72nd Avenue and Northeast 239th Street intersection. Through submittal of customer service requests, the Traffic Engineering section performed an engineering study of the intersection and determined that this change is in the best interest of travelers.
