Project update - February 2017
Construction is largely complete, including the pedestrian crossing signal, with only a few small details still to be finished.
Project specifics
This project built bicycle and pedestrian improvements along the west side of Highway 99.
The previously substandard sidewalk along this 0.75-mile section of Highway 99 was reconstructed to a minimum width of 6 feet (up to 8 feet where right-of-way widths allow), creating a safer, disabled-accessible walkway for pedestrians.
Specific items included:
- Widened the west-side sidewalk and removed pedestrian obstacles and obstructions, such as cracked, heaved or broken sidewalk and some utility poles. The project also improved curb ramps at streets and driveways to meet Americans with Disabilities Act requirements.
- Built a pedestrian crossing on Highway 99 between crosswalks at Northeast 72nd Street and Northeast 78th Street. The crossing has a refuge area so pedestrians don’t have to cross all four of Highway 99’s traffic lanes at once.
- Improved bicycle facilities by widening the west-side bicycle lane from 6 to 8 feet and adding bicycle lane striping and symbols. A bicycle repair station was constructed to assist cyclists in fixing flat tires and making other repairs.
The project ties into improvements completed a couple years ago as part of the 2.16-acre Maj Retail Center anchored by Panera Bread, 7200 NE Highway 99.
Improvements will tie into the wider sidewalk built by the Maj Retail Center.Schedule
Work started in early July and is expected to end in February 2018.
Funding
This project is made possible by grants from state and federal agencies:
- Washington Pedestrian and Bicycle Program, $725,000
- Federal Highway Administration Surface Transportation Program, $300,000
- Federal Highway Administration Transportation Alternatives Program, $250,000
- Washington State Transportation Improvement Board, $250,000
These funds will cover an estimated 70 percent of design, property acquisition and construction costs.
Paving
In September, a different contractor, Granite Construction Co., paved Highway 99 with a fresh layer of asphalt, from the railroad bridge north to Northeast 78th Street.
